Secret Tips to Combat Aging After 30

Well here I am.

After talking about it for years, months, weeks, days…. I’m finally here.  And yes, for those who have heard my daily rant counting down to this momentous event, this may be the last time I publicly acknowledge it.  I however am not making any promises, haha! 😉

Anywho, in a haze of fabulous shoes, career changes, bridesmaids dresses, blessed godchildren, familial bonding and getting hitched…I managed to somehow get here.  As of yesterday, Dec. 27th, 2016 I reached the point of true adulthood.

A crowned thirty-year-old.

That’s three decades.  360 months. 1565 weeks. 10,957 days.

Oh, and thank you to my wonderful friends and family who greeted and celebrated with me on this fabulous day! Hugs & Kisses!

Amazing how time goes by faster than you know it.  The goal is to age gracefully, yes? Soon enough I’ll be in my sixties, older, wiser, grumpier, wrinklier.  Although at that point of my life, I would love to still feel (and look) like I’m in my thirties, (it doesn’t feel that bad at this moment, kind of glamorous almost) hence this blog post.

To look and feel healthy and young for as long as the hands of time allows can indeed, be possible.

Let’s unveil some secrets to fight off the not-so-glamorous signs of aging.

WATER
Water is essential to all living things, making up 2/3 of the human body.  It’s not only important to life itself but also for the quality of life so make it your best friend.  Water is needed in our bodies to transport nutrients to our organs and oxygen to our cells. Water lubricate  joints and eyes and keeps skin healthy by eliminating toxins.  Did you know that when you are dehydrated your body pulls liquid from  your tissues and skin to maintain the balance in your blood?  When that happens, your eyes look sunken and your skin feels dryer, there is no elasticity, hence you look older. Make a conscious effort to drink water to keep hydrated. There is no denying water is the elixir of youth.

MEDITATION
Meditation is important to keep a stress-free life.  Without stress, life is happier!  Stress affects our bodies in more ways than you can imagine.  Our immune system, quality of sleep, our hearts and mind…. our relationship with others can be affected by stress.  Meditation can help relieve stress by focusing on being in the moment and appreciating the present. Studies show that there is an increase of melatonin in our bodies after meditating.  Melatonin energizes the immune system and slows the aging process as it has the ability to repair damaged cells.

ANTI-AGING SERUM
Serums are more lightweight than creams so they are able to penetrate deeper into the skin delivering active ingredients.  Industry fave Estée Lauder “Advanced Night Repair” serum is a must-have. EYE CREAM

TEETH CARE
Your smile is one of the first things people notice. Protect it. EXERCISE
Exercising regularly can fight aging by protecting cells and lowering the body’s level of inflammation.  Yoga, due to the extent of stretches and core exercises involved, is believed to help reverse signs of aging such as sagging skin and loss of muscle strength. Endurance activities such as running may also be able to slow down aging.  Benefits of running include a stronger heart, more efficient blood flow and a powerful immune system.  Exercise fights aging by protecting your cells from the ticking clock but make sure that you also protect your body by investing in proper attire and gear.  On a personal note, this is the best time for me to include running as part of my physical activity and to do so properly, I will need to purchase running shoes, like the  NIKE Air Max 2017.  I am in love!
They are the perfect running shoes, but can also be street casual.

HEALTHY EATING
Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that combat free radicals, oxygen fragments that attack cell membranes. Nutrients in fruits and vegetables can also help do everything from preventing wrinkles to killing off cancerous cells. Luckily I have had a pescatarian diet for half my life now (since age 15) so I just have to continue the greenery and fish intake.

SUNSCREEN

GREEN TEA

Victoria’s Secret Paris

Victoria’s Secret just launched their newest fragrance, Paris.  A limited edition and also the official fragrance of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Paris was inspired by The City of Light, which VS also deemed as “the world’s sexiest city”.

Victoria’s Secret describe the scent as “festive, crisp and sexy… captures the scent of Parisian gardens in wintertime.” Scent notes are composed of French cypress, night blooming jasmine and white cedarwood. The glamorous diamond-cut bottle seems to give a nod to the architectural style of the iconic Eiffel Tower.  The red ribbon add that touch of sexy as well as  holiday cheer to the season’s festivities.   The bottle is encased in a white and clear box with glitter and snowflakes, reflecting the sparkle of the city at night.

For those who know me well a have a slight obsession with Paris and anything Parisian. Remember my 25th Birthday Celebration?   I also love Victoria’s Secret and anything VS.  So of course there is no doubt that I had to absolutely get it.  I went to the newly opened VS at Kamakana Ali’i in Kapolei, used my $15 Angel Rewards Card and went home a very happy & fulfilled shopaholic-on-a-budget. 😉

The Power Pout- Fuchsia is the New Red

One of my favorite pieces to write about, PINK LIPSTICK.  This reminds me so much of college days- Theater class.  Part of an icebreaker was to go around the room describing our fellow classmates in three words.  When it was about me, an undergrad named Jack had said “Honey?!…Uhhh, long black hair, dangly earrings and pink lips.”   Statement lipstick back in the day was too bold and daring.  But whaddayah know, nothing changed.  In style or not, I still wear pink lipstick up until today. 😉

And I’m so happy  that in the fashion world, statement lips aren’t going anywhere this season. More specifically, fuchsia pink.

Fresher than red, fuchsia is a mix of naughty and nice- cool and luxurious, trendy but still ladylike.  It’s the perfect alternative to the classic red lips especially during spring and summer.

First time trying out this show-stopper look?  See below for tips on how to wear it right:

*Make sure you’ve exfoliated your lips so that they’re smooth and soft.
*Keep it simple. Choose base makeup that’s subtle but defined enough so the bright pink shade doesn’t wash you out. Yes, you can still wear eye makeup, but go easy on your eyeshadow choice.
*If you have cooler skin, select a lipstick one with blue undertones. and if you have warm undertones, opt for something more orange or red-based.
*For a longer-lasting effect, pat a bit of concealer or foundation over your lips to anchor the color.

Crowning Glory- Little Princesses

Susan Page Modeling will be holding its fourth annual Little Miss Hawaii Princess and Junior Miss Hawaii Princess, and very first annual Tiny Miss Hawaii Princess Pageants on Saturday, September 1st 2012 at Leeward Community College.  There are 27 beautiful little princesses vying for the titles in three different age divisions, ages 4 to 9 years old.

Pageants are remarkable experiences for little girls, and this is not the dreadful “tots and tiaras” pageants that you imagine them to be.  The girls learn confidence, poise, and grace. They are taught to be polite, to follow directions, to befriend and respect each other, just like how princesses should be.

The finalists have gone through a fun training workshop with Pageant Instructor and Director, one of the most amazing people I know, Ms. Shawn Torres-Akiyama.  They also had their professional pageant photos taken by one of Hawaii’s top fashion photographer, Adam Jung. Photographer Damien Bujecker will be in attendance to capture the pageant event on September 1st. This group is by far, my favorite group of little princesses I have had the opportunity to work with.

The finalists will be judged in 3 major categories- Fashion Modeling, Hawaiiana Beauty, Evening Gown, and an additional Overall Personality category.  Other Awards include Miss Congeniality, Most Photogenic, Miss Supermodel, Miss Fashionista, Miss Hawaiiana Beauty, Miss Popularity and People’s Choice Award.  The judging panel includes five professionals in Hawaii’s medical, fashion, beauty, art and pageant industries. The show will be emceed by the beautiful Miss Amber Stone.

Breathtaking performances by current titleholders of Susan Page Modeling’s sister pageants will also be featured- Shayna Raymond (Miss Hawaii Jr. Teen Princess 2012), Shardenei Luning (Miss Hawaii Preteen Princess 2012) and Jackie Taylor (Miss Hawaii Teen Beauty 2012). Taylor Kiehm, a promising young talent will also grace us with her captivating jazz and hula numbers.  Last year’s Queens, Brielle Sadorra, Junior Miss Hawaii Princess 2012 and Patricia Morta, Little Miss Hawaii Princess 2012 will be passing their titles to the 2013 winners.

This pageant have the largest group and the most beautiful princesses. Its definitely not one to miss!

Aloha Beautiful! – The Transit of Venus

A rare and beautiful astronomical event will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, June 5th, 2012.

The planet Venus will be in transit…. passing directly between the Sun and the Earth and becoming visible to us as a small, dark disk moving across the face of the Sun.

The only planetary transits observable on Earth are of Mercury and Venus. Mercury has an average of 13 transits every 100 years. The Transit of Venus, however is phenomenal, occurring in a pattern that repeats every 243 years, with a pair of transits eight years apart. In this century, the prior transit was on June 8, 2004. After 2012, the next transit of Venus will take place in December 2117!

The entire event will be widely visible from the western Pacific, northwester North America, eastern Asia (including Japan and the Philippines) and eastern Australia.

I can honestly say that I will not be holding on until 2117 to witness the next transit of Venus, which is why I am dedicating a few hours of my afternoon to catch a glimpse and say my aloha to the beautiful planet.  Lucky I am an island girl and live in Hawaii, as it is one of the best locations to witness this spectacular occasion.

According to transitofvenus.org, the local transit times in Honolulu are between 12pm – 6pm.

NASA EDGE at Mauna Kea (through partnership with UH Institute of Astronomy on the Big Island of Hawaii) will also be having a live webcast during this time. Watch it here.

When viewing the sun, take precautions! Construct a pinhole-camera, or a pinhole mirror. If available utilize binoculars or a telescope, but remember, do not look DIRECTLY at the sun! Venus should appear as a tiny dot on the projected image. You can also consider purchasing a shade 13 or 14 arc-welder’s glass.

Hope everyone can get to see The Transit of Venus; you won’t want to miss such an astonishing occurrence of this lifetime.

Superfoods for Superhair

Aloha everyone!

After my post “Locks of Youth- Secret to Luscious Hair” I have had numerous inquiries on what hair products I use on a daily basis.

Nothing fancy, really.  Just Head & Shoulders (2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner), and Herbal Essence (Volumizing Conditioner).

Here’s a secret for ya: Using the right shampoo and conditioner alone does not give us the luxurious locks we crave.  Our diet plays an important factor, as a memorable saying goes, “You are what you eat,”… the health of your hair depends a lot on the food you consume.  Just like the rest of your body, your hair needs balanced doses of protein, vitamins, minerals, and oils to grow.

Here are ten Superfoods for Superfabhair. 

EGGS

Eggs are one of the best protein sources you can find. They contain lots of biotin (which helps strengthen hair and nails) and vitamins B5, B12, and D.   In addition eggs also contains sulfur, a tress-boosting mineral.

SALMON

Salmon is filled with protein, iron and omega-3 fatty acids, a high-quality protein source that is loaded with Vitamin B-6 and B-12, which produces red blood cells to carry oxygen to follicles.  A deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids can result to a dry scalp and dull hair.

AVOCADO

Avocados contain lots essential fats and are a great source of biotin, which is key to growing healthy hair. Biotin helps hair grow thicker, stronger, and longer.  You can even apply avocado directly on to your hair as a hair mask, adding body and shine to your hair.

CARROTS

Carrots are an excellent source of Vitamin A, which aid in having healthy scalp and shiny hair, and not to mention good vision 😉 If shiny, well-conditioned hair is what you want, you need to have a healthy scalp, so keep munching on those carrots.

OLIVE OIL

Olive oil contains essential Vitamin E.  In addition, the polyphenols in olive oil help control inflammation which can damage hair follicles as we get older.  Like avocado, you can also apply olive oil directly on your hair, especially in winter or on humid days.  Combing on a tablespoon of olive oil can tame frizzy hair and help moisturize your mane.

FLAX SEED

Flaxseeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.  They also contain lignans- plant-derived chemicals that act as antioxidants.  Flaxseed help prevent hair loss and boost hair strength.

DARK GREEN VEGETABLES

Dark green vegetables like spinach and broccoli provides iron and calcium, as well as Vitamins A and C.  Your body uses these minerals and vitamins to produce sebum, an oily secretion from your hair follicles, which naturally conditions your hair and promotes hair growth.


WALNUTS

Walnuts provide zinc and fatty acids. Walnuts have alpha-linolenic acid, an omega 3 fatty acid that help condition and moisturize your hair.

BEANS 

Beans are another example super food for healthy hair. Beans provide good amounts of protein for hair growth, as well as iron, zinc and biotin. A deficiency in biotin can result in dry, brittle hair.

YOGURT

Yogurt contain calcium, a mineral that is vital in the role of hair growth.  It contains whey and casein, both excellent high quality protein sources necessary for a healthy scalp and hair.  For better results, opt for unsweetened Greek yogurt instead of the sweet,colorful yogurts.

Summer is coming up, and the island girl in me needs her beachin’ body back.

So…I have decided to once again put on my workout shoes, and go back into a strict no-rice, salad, fish and vegetables only, no ice cream, French fries, cupcakes, cookies, or chocolate…. and absolutely no stardust, sparkles and pretty rainbows diet.

After browsing through April’s issue of Muscle and Performance Magazine, I was relieved. Interestingly enough, there was an article that promotes cheating…on your diet. Written by Matthew Kadey, “The Cheat Sheet” explains why it’s perfectly fine to occasionally give in to your anti-diet cravings.

If cravings are driving you crazy, don’t wallow in misery: FIGHT BACK AND CHEAT. Planned cheating can conquer cravings and even help your physique continue to progress into awesomeness.

Here’s the few good reasons why:

BOOST YOUR METABOLISM
Many diets involve some degree of calorie restriction, and after a period, your brain thinks you’re in starvation mode therefore telling your body to slow down your metabolism. A break from dieting can interrupt this slowdown with your sudden intake of extra calories, keeping your metabolism revved for additional fat burning.

BOOST YOUR HORMONES
Leptin, a metabolism-revving and fat burning hormone, has the tendency to fall when calorie intake drops. Think: if your body is low on calories, it releases less leptin to keep the little energy it has. Consuming more calories increases leptin levels further boosting your metabolism.

Cheating in your diet program allows you a much-needed mental break from a repetitive, monotonous meal plan. You’ll look forward to your cheat day, and you’ll be able to keep your sanity during your strict diet, rather than completely falling apart and giving up. I have done this, countless of times. Yes, darling there is room for donuts or cupcakes, and flat, sexy abs ;).

BOOST YOUR SOCIAL LIFE
You can eat dinner with your friends and not have to count calories in your head. And you don’t have to spend Saturday night home alone either.
